About
Katie Cote offers the world of illustration a taste of the surreal, bizarre, often dark corners of her mind through a multitude of images that invite the viewer to join them in their storytelling destinies. Guided by her inner child, Katie expresses her ideas through humor and symbolism.
Katie acquired the intricacies of her craft and unified style at Savannah College of Art and Design, which taught her not only how to hone her drawing and visual communication, but also prepared her to approach the world full of curiosity, wonder and mischief. Her art reflects this in the dream-like narrative interaction between character, object, and background. Her bold and deliberate style seizes the viewer and juxtaposes her fairy-tale-like content. With this grasp on the audience of her work, Katie would like to change the world.
Inspired by the comic books and fantasy cartoons of her youth, Katie chose the mighty ink pen as the method of delivery for her creations, bringing them to life with a treatment of prismacolor marker, colored pencil, and more recently, the digital brush. Her favorite method of telling stories is through characters and symbolic animals, which illustrate her experiences of finding herself in the woods and spending hours at DIY venues listening to bands with a myriad of genres. Influenced heavily by nature, mythology and music, her affinity for the energetic, raw, emotional punk aesthetic is sharpened by her disciplined training in anatomical accuracy, portraiture, and line work. Her artwork has a lighter side however, because of her summer spent teaching art to elementary school children at Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, which boosted her optimism and diminished her tendencies to take life too seriously. Now, she draws cartoons a lot.
Katie’s vivacious and outspoken personality comes out in her style and delivery of the message of her work. She is essentially the culmination of her characters, or rather, they are all little facets of herself that help her make sense of the world.
